When Azharia steps onto the basketball court, she plays with heart. A talented athlete from a young age, she earned a spot on the varsity basketball team at Bowie High School as a freshman—a remarkable achievement that reflected years of dedication and hard work.

But behind every game was a challenge few people could see.

For years, Azharia struggled with recurring knee dislocations. Her mother even paid out of pocket for an orthopedic consultation, but together they decided to postpone surgery. "She was only 12," her mom recalls. She wanted to give her time to grow and develop.

"Then catastophe happened."

During a select basketball tournament, Azharia took a hard fall and fractured her patella. What had once been an elective procedure suddenly became an urgent medical necessity.

Although insurance covered part of the surgery, the family still faced a significant hurdle: a required deposit before a surgery date could even be scheduled.

As a single mother supporting two children, Azharia's mom had already stretched every dollar as far as it could go.

"I didn't know where to turn," she said.

That's when friends encouraged her to contact Gill Children's Services.

Gill's case manager immediately went to work, coordinating with the hospital, anesthesia group, and physician to make Azharia's surgery possible. Thanks to generous discounts from the medical providers and the compassion of Gill's donors, the required surgery deposit was covered.

"I would have had to put off the surgery indefinitely," her mom shared. "Gill helped me when I thought help was not possible."

Like many young patients, Azharia was scared before surgery."Azharia was very fearful in the beginning," her mom said. Thankfully, the procedure was successful. Recovery has taken time, but with determination, Azharia has steadily regained her strength and returned to doing what she loves most: playing basketball.

For Azharia and her family, the generosity of Gill's supporters changed the course of her future."From the bottom of my heart, thank you," her mother says. "I am so appreciative of all the donors because without them, the surgery would not have happened. Thank God for Gill Children's Services."
